"CG Director" is not well known title here at U.S. but it acts like VFX supervisor + CG Supervisor + Generalist artist in Japan. CG Director works with the client (director and agency) directly and decide the way to shoot the live action plate for visual effects part of the shooting and is responsible for all visual, technical direction for computer graphics on the project. The scale of the project is usually smaller than U.S. and that allows CG Director to work for the various tasks at a same time. I was also a VFX producer works for the bidding and hire the artists to make a team in the budget. The VFX budget in Japanese TV commercial usually allows to have only 2-3 generalists includes CG Director, therefore the artist needed to work for tracking a camera and the object, then modeling, rig and anim even particle or dynamics fx at a same time. We didn't have a time at all for texturing, lookdev and lighting, so those needed to be done while we were working for rig and anim. The average of the schedule was like 3 weeks or 4 weeks for all Visual Effects tasks includes delivery in most of the commercial. I had been working as a CG Director / VFX producer for years in Japan and would like to introduce a part of the works here.
